Is hydrogen explosive?

It is the first question everyone asks, and it deserves a straight answer rather than reassurance. Here is the complete breakdown, with the numbers.

The three conditions for ignition.

Hydrogen ignites only when three conditions hold simultaneously:

  1. A sealed space — no ventilation to disperse the gas.
  2. Concentration ≥ 4% — the lower flammability limit in air.
  3. An ignition source — a spark, flame, or hot surface.

A session in a ventilated room fails the first two conditions before the third is even relevant.

The real numbers.

The gas leaves the cannula, mixes with room air, and disperses. There is no accumulation in an open room.

Where 6,000 comes from: a resting adult takes about 15 breaths a minute at roughly 400 ml a breath — 15 × 400 = 6,000 ml/min of air moved. Against that, a 333 ml/min device contributes 333 ÷ 6,000 ≈ 5.5% of what you inhale. Check the arithmetic yourself; we would rather you did.

Why 5.5% is not the 4% above. The 4% figure is the point at which hydrogen becomes flammable in the air of a sealed room. The 5.5% figure is the share of hydrogen in the stream you breathe in through the cannula. They describe two different volumes, and the second never becomes the first — the gas is inhaled or dispersed as fast as it is produced.
